What is a Community College? Why do people go there?

Community colleges (two-year colleges) can be a good place to start as an undergraduate student in the U.S. This is because, usually, you can attend a community college for the first two years of an undergraduate degree and then transfer to your preferred university for the final two years of your degree.

Why Go to a Community College?

Community colleges, compared to four year universities, usually have:

  • cheaper tuition and fees
  • easierĀ  acceptance and later application deadlines
  • smaller classes
  • a good basic education

Transfer Agreements

Community colleges usually have transfer agreements with local four-year universities. This means that courses you take at a community college will be counted for credit at the university. A student should always meet with an academic advisor to talk over all the details before enrolling in a community college.
