Turning one’s life to English

You have been taking classes in English for a while now. Maybe you’ve taken classes in your home country, maybe even at a different school in the U.S. How much did you learn? How much have you improved?

Many students say that they didn’t learn much in their home country even after years of studying English. Why is it? This may be because of the intensity of learning, and it applies to your classes at the Tutorium as well.

If you just go to classes and do homework, it is simply not enough. You will not see the improvement over the course of the semester that you hope for, that you need, to progress.

To really improve your English over a short period of time, you need to turn your life to English:

  1. Turn all your devices to English (even applications such as MS Word or search engines).
  2. Speak only English when on campus or with international friends (or any friends, really).
  3. Write in English only (notes, grocery list, reminders, diary, even messages to your friends).
  4. Find entertainment in English (on your phone, at home on your computer/tablet, in real life).
  5. Do not use translation unless absolutely necessary.
  6. Find fellow students, friends, family who are motivated to join you in these steps.

This doesn’t mean not using your first language at all. Be proud of who you are and where you come from. Talk to your family and friends back home. However, when it’s time to switch to English, do it, and stay in English for the majority of the day, every day. This is how you will reach your goals.
