Writing and Grammar

This course combines in-class group instruction with online private instruction to help high-intermediate to advanced English language learners improve their writing skills. On Mondays, your class meets for instruction in grammar and writing. On Thursdays, you submit writing assignments online for individualized instructor feedback and correction.

Weekly assignments are based on writing tasks you need to complete in your own job or studies. This course will help you to understand and apply the rules of written English, and it will teach you how to find and correct your own grammar and punctuation errors in academic or professional writing tasks.

During this course, you will:

  • Identify and correct grammar errors through editing and proofreading
  • Practice techniques for clear, effective writing
  • Receive individualized feedback from your instructor

Course Dates and Times

Mondays, meet 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Tutorium office: 1333 S. Halsted Street, Suite 260.
Thursdays, submit assignments and receive instructor feedback online

  • Spring: Feb. 27 – April 3
  • Fall I: Sept. 11 – Oct. 16
  • Fall II: Oct. 23 – Nov. 27

Tuition and Registration

Fee: $500 ($475 for UIC members and returning students) Tuition includes all class materials.

Registration: The registration deadline is 1 week before classes begin. Late registration is possible if there is space. We limit class size, so please register early.

Online Grammar for Self-Editing

This 5-week course is for intermediate to advanced level non-native speakers of English. It meets 100% online. There is no face-to-face classroom requirement. You use the Blackboard learning management system (https://blackboard.uic.edu) to view online assignments, participate in discussions, submit assignments, and receive feedback from your instructor.

This course focuses on producing clear, error-free writing at the intermediate to advanced level.  Your instructor will guide you through advanced grammar review, writing sample analysis, and development of effective self-editing techniques. You work at your own pace and set your own deadlines, and you will receive detailed weekly feedback from your instructor.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Identify weaknesses in your own and others’ writing
  • Make fewer errors in advanced grammatical structures
  • Use effective strategies for proofreading and editing your own work

This 5-week course is for intermediate to advanced level non-native speakers of English. It meets 100% online. There is no face-to-face classroom requirement. This course focuses on how to produce concise, clear writing at the intermediate to advanced level.  You will learn techniques for starting a writing project, working with outlines, creating clear paragraphs, crafting introductions and conclusions, and adding concrete details. You work at your own pace and set your own deadlines, and you will receive detailed weekly feedback from your instructor.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Improve both paragraph and document organization
  • Be more confident with starting, revising, and concluding your writing
  • Clearly communicate ideas in a professionally written document
